ABOUT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Question; Is it better than a photo lab that uses a darkroom or artists that use real paint and brushes ?
Answer; In most cases digital methods are better because they are less expensive, faster to get results, and finishing touches or changes are easily attained.
Question; What will happen to my original photo ?
Answer; Nothing. Once we receive it we will scan it into a digital format for processing and return the original to you unchanged. All changes are done on the digital image.
See our sending photos section on this page.
Question; Can I send pictures from my digital camera ?
Answer; Yes, we actually prefer to get digital images because it saves time and shipping costs and avoids the concern over having the picture lost or damaged in shipping.
Question; I have a scanner, can I send pictures I scan ?
Answer; Yes, we prefer them the same as with digital camera images.
See our I'VE GOT A SCANNER page for more information

DIGITAL CAMERA PHOTOS

All digital cameras are not the same. The difference is in the resolution of the camera.
They take pictures like most scanners, with tiny sensors that digitize what they see. Manufacturers measure the resolution in Pixels or mega Pixels. The more they have, the better especially if you want to enlarge the photo. The quality of the lens is also important.
Zoom lenses can make a difference. Optical zoom can bring the objects closer to the sensors and gives a full quality copy of the enlarged image. Digital zoom only enlarges the view of what the sensors show you to help you center the image. It does not give a higher quality copy of the enlarged view.
If you want a true zoom camera, the optical zoom is the number that counts.

I'VE GOT A SCANNER

You can scan them and depending on the size of the image file you can send it as an Email attachment, or a floppy or a zip disk (which we will return), or a CD if you have a burner. We can handle most image formats.
We prefer jpg or jpeg and will most likely convert other formats to work with them.

If you can scan your pictures it is the fastest, most safe and least expensive way to get them here.

1) We prefer to have photos scanned at 300 dots per inch  (even for black & white)  this way you get the best quality at a reasonable transfer/upload using email attachment method.

ABOUT SCANNER RESOLUTION
Most home use scanners have 300 to 1200 actual sensors per inch of horizontal scan bar. They claim to scan at higher resolution but use your computer to fill in average color dots between the real data dots they saw. Do not send images scanned at a resolution greater than the horizontal optical resolution of your scanner.
They are much larger files and can be fuzzy. Consult your owners manual.

2) Save the file in a location on your computer that you will remember along with its name.

3) Send the file as an attachment to photoworks@randscamera.com
In the message area include the name of the attached file, a description of the product you would like and appropriate contact information (name, Email address and if desired phone# and best time to call),
We will respond with an estimate or contact you if there are any questions. There is no obligation until you have approved the work.

SENDING PHOTOS

PROTECT THEM !
Consider what it would mean to you if the photos were lost or damaged before you pack them for shipment. Use a carrier that can provide a tracking number - this will help locate misplaced items. If you like - Email the number to us and we will confirm safe arrival.
Photo faces can stick - shield them from other photos or plastic surfaces with blank paper.
If possible protect them in a plastic bag or wrap.
Surround the pictures with thick cardboard to prevent folding.
Package them in a padded mailer or box if required.
Label them - Photos - Do Not Bend - Fragile - or similar wording.
Labels and or stamps are usually available at the carriers place of business.

Mailing items is a way of life and the delivery services have an extremely high success rate. Consider that most bills are sent by mail and unfortunately they all get there without damage. In many years of sending and receiving photos we have had only one item arrive damaged and the fault was with the package type and the lack of marking for the carrier to be aware of. Please read the comments below, then package and send with confidence.
Lost - Folded - crushed - water soaked - otherwise damaged items are rare but can happen.
Consider insuring the item
All items should be mailed to:

Rand's Camera & HI FI
1841 Hooper Ave.

Toms River, NJ 08753

Please remember to include your contact information and the type service you would like.
If you have an estimate from us - please send a printout of it.
